Community Connection

Education is the cornerstone of everything we do at the Concussion Centre. We are dedicated to providing the most up to date information and resources to youth, families and the community for concussion prevention, identification and management.

The Concussion Centre team actively participates in local events spreading education and awareness about pediatric concussion throughout the community. Recently, the Concussion Centre has attended the Toronto District School Board Healthy Schools 5k Run/Walk, the OHL Cup hosted by GTHL Hockey, the Scarborough West Rouge Soccer Challenge and the Robbie Soccer Tournament in Toronto.

One of our biggest initiatives to educate youth and families about concussion has been through an interactive exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre. Over a six month period, our concussion experts attended the Ontario Science Centre every Sunday, engaging with countless families and youth.

Part of the exhibit included the opportunity for children to draw what a concussion meant to them, allowing our researchers to gather valuable insights about the emotional aspect of concussion. These unique drawings were later used to build an art display, presented at the One Voice Symposium on June 3, 2015 at Holland Bloorview. In addition, the concussion team was able to collect data from 500 children who performed the 3-D Neurotracker and BioSway system to measure attention and balance.

Aside from games and activities at local sports tournaments, the Concussion Centre also provides formal concussion education to organizations such as: the Ontario Soccer Association, Synchro Canada, Toronto Leaside Girls Hockey Association and the Ontario Lacrosse Association.
