Infinite Possibilities 2007-2012: Strategic Plan

Goal 3: Innovating and excelling in teaching and learning

Holland Bloorview's teaching and learning team

Holland Bloorview’s teaching and learning team is now fully assembled and eager to continue work on teaching and learning initiatives across Holland Bloorview. Over the coming weeks, the team under the leadership of Golda Milo-Manson, VP medicine and academic affairs, will work towards finalizing a plan for next steps in the integration of teaching and learning into the fabric of all the work accomplished at Holland Bloorview.

“With a full teaching and learning team, we are now ready to tackle new challenges,” says Milo-Manson.  “We have a number of exciting events and initiatives coming up - all designed to contribute to our academic mission of creating a top-notch experience for students and trainees and fostering a supportive environment for staff to engage in teaching and learning.”

Over the last few months, the team has made significant progress towards achieving the goals outlined in Holland Bloorview’s Teaching & Learning Strategic Plan 2009-2014, which are designed to strengthen the education enterprise at Holland Bloorview. These include:

  • Enhancing the student and trainee experience at Holland Bloorview.
  • Innovating in teaching and learning approaches.
  • Leading interprofessional education in childhood disability.
  • Increasing training capacity for future health care providers in childhood disability.
  • Extending teaching and learning to clients and families; embracing families as faculty.
  • Equipping our staff to be excellent supervisors and educators through faculty development and mentoring.

The team will propel Holland Bloorview’s role as an academic health sciences centre by pursuing new and innovative ways to foster the integration of clinical practice and research.  A recent example of this integration is the official launch of Holland Bloorview’s Evidence to Care initiative, marked by the announcement of the demonstration project on chronic pain assessment and cerebral palsy.

Simulation Lab

An exciting development in teaching and learning at Holland Bloorview is the simulation lab. Simulation is a tool which involves the recreation of an authentic clinical experience for the purpose of learning and assessment. We are pleased to announce that Holland Bloorview’s simulation lab is now in use and simulation modules have been developed in interprofessional education, disclosing adverse events and code whites. The teaching and learning team is looking at continuing our collaboration with external partners to design curriculum and further develop our teaching faculty.

Our students

In an effort to provide students and trainees with the optimal learning experience, the teaching and learning team has been working towards making the student and trainee experience more consistent across disciplines and departments throughout Holland Bloorview. Through the new role of student coordinator, the team is reaching out to students and engaging them in dialogue, creating clear processes around student placements. The team has also increased faculty development opportunities provided through skill development at Holland Bloorview and by facilitating linkages with external partners.
