Julia Hanigsberg appointed President and CEO of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

TORONTO (ON) - October 1, 2014 – On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Holland Bloorview, Dr. Janet Morrison, Acting Chair, is pleased to announce the appointment of Julia Hanigsberg as the hospital’s new President and CEO.

“Julia is an inspirational and accomplished public sector leader. She is widely recognized as a strong, collaborative relationship builder with significant achievements in large, complex organizations including education, law and government,” says Dr. Morrison. “We are thrilled that Julia has agreed to join Holland Bloorview.”

Julia, who is currently the Vice-President Administration and Finance at Ryerson University, will officially begin her role at Holland Bloorview in January 2015.

Julia has strong roots at Holland Bloorview as a parent and a volunteer. A mother of three, Julia’s eldest daughter has special needs, so Julia knows first hand the importance of, and is committed to, furthering Holland Bloorview’s leadership role in client and family centred care and the field of childhood disability. She has also served as Chair of our Board of Trustees, Chair of the Business and Audit Committee and as a member of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.

In early September, Julia officially stepped down from her roles as Chair of the Search Committee, Chair of the Board and member of the Foundation Board in order to be considered a candidate for the position of President and CEO.

“I am honoured to be joining Holland Bloorview, a global leader in childhood disability,” says Julia. “I am passionate about improving the lives of children and youth with special needs and look forward to working alongside healthcare providers, scientists, clients and families to move forward an exciting agenda in care, research, teaching and learning.”

Prior to her role as the Vice-President Administration and Finance at Ryerson University, Julia served as General Counsel and Secretary of the Ryerson Board of Governors and as Interim Dean of The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.

Before joining Ryerson, Julia worked for the Ontario government as Counsel and Special Advisor to the Secretary of Cabinet, Special Advisor to the Deputy Attorney General and in the Policy Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General. She was Chief of Staff to the Attorney General of Ontario from 2003 to 2005.

Julia holds a BCL and LLB from McGill's Faculty of Law (where she was Editor-in-Chief of the McGill Law Journal), and an LLM from Columbia University Law School where she held a Fulbright fellowship and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada fellowship. She has authored and published several articles.

Julia will be taking over from the current President and CEO, Sheila Jarvis. Sheila will be stepping down after eighteen years, having successfully led the hospital through unprecedented transformational change and growth.

Dr. Janet Morrison
