Preparing for Adult Life: For Families & Youth: Getting Started

Growing Up Ready

All children, regardless of whether they have a disability or not, will become adults.  At Bloorview Kids Rehab, we want our clients to “Grow Up Ready.”

Bloorview offers its medical and traditional therapy services to people under the age of 18 years. Some specialty services such as dental, seating, orthotics and life skill programs are available to clients older than 18 years of age.  When a client turns 18, medical care will be transferred to an adult service provider.

Moving to the adult world brings many changes.  The Growing Up Ready framework was developed so children and youth can learn what they need to know to be active and successful in adult life.

Starting Early

Getting ready for adult life takes time, so it’s best to start early.  You may need to:

  • Think about your future and what you want it to look like.
  • Learn about new programs and services.
  • Think about the level of independence you require to be prepared for the adult world.

So take charge and get ready for the exciting changes that lie ahead!

Getting Started

Start by talking to your health-care team.  The nurse on your team is a great place to start – your nurse can point you in the right direction.  Talk to him or her about planning for your future and ask your nurse how your health-care team can help you get ready for adult life.
