Adapted Programs and Integrated Services Guides

At a City of Toronto event in November, Mayor David Miller and Councillor Adrian Heaps helped launch the new series of Adapted Programs and Integrated Services Guides for People with Disabilities. These guides make information about accessible recreation activities more available for individuals, families, staff, agencies and organizations.

“These new recreation resource guides are a step in the right direction to building a city that is inclusive, welcoming and liveable for all,” said Mayor Miller. “This is one of the initiatives under the City’s Accessibility Plan that will improve how people with disabilities access our programs and services.”

The resource guides were produced as a response to community feedback received from the Getting Services Right for People with Disabilities consultations, with 14 public meetings and surveys, including a focus group held at Bloorview.

Many staff at Bloorview have worked towards making it easier for Bloorview’s clients and families to participate in City recreational activities.  The resource guides have been welcomed by families and staff.  It is Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation’s goal to increase the number of people with a disability enrolled in programs by 1,000 per cent.

The guides are available in multiple formats (electronic, print and Braille) for four districts: Etobicoke/York, North York, Scarborough and Toronto/East York. They feature City and community-operated programs designed for people of all ages, interests and abilities. The guides include information on how to register and who to contact for more information.
