Can Cerebral Palsy be Treated?

There is no “cure” for cerebral palsy. The focus of service for people with cerebral palsy is to promote health, wellness and participation. We know children and families may experience challenges because of the disability, but this should not stop them from becoming active members of society.

Our goal is to help children achieve their greatest potential through therapy, prevention of secondary problems, and participation in school and in the community.

Toronto’s Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is the largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital in Canada. Children who attend Holland Bloorview have a broad range of disabilities. Children with cerebral palsy are seen in the Child Development Program. Each child has a developmental pediatrician who will see them regularly. There is a nurse associated with each physician, who will be the family’s first line of contact.

Children are then referred to the many services within the organization if they are needed, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, feeding clinic, speech and language therapy, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, neurology, recreation services and more.
