Bloorview Research Institute

Student Opportunities: The Ward Family Foundation Summer Student Endowment Program

*Applications for the 2010 summer program are now closed.

The Bloorview Research Institute is located at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

The Research Institute is dedicated to three areas of research: evaluation of care, innovation and development, and participation. With a vision to be an international leader in pediatric rehabilitation research, the Research Institute recognizes the importance of building capacity and training the next generation of rehabilitation scientists.

This program gives students an opportunity to work side by side with some of Canada’s leading children’s rehabilitation scientists in an interdisciplinary research environment.

The 12-week program runs during the period from May/June to July/August. Specific start dates are arranged directly with the hiring scientists.

While participating in the program, students are required to attend a number of seminars given by leading health-care professionals. Students must also showcase their work at The Ward Family Summer Student Research Day, where each student is asked to prepare a poster and give a short presentation on their summer research.

Students are encouraged to learn more about Holland Bloorview’s scientists and their research areas.

Who is eligible?

At the time of application, students must be in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate degree program. Students in medical school may also apply. Students registered in a MSc/MA or PhD program are not eligible for summer studentships.

What is funded?

The studentship is $4797.00 (based on an hourly rate of $10.25 for a 37.5 hour week, less statutory deductions, including 4% in lieu of vacation) for the 12-week program. Students will be paid biweekly through payroll.

How do I apply?

Interested applicants are advised to review Holland Bloorview's scientist profiles and to directly contact (via e-mail) the scientist(s) they want to work with.

Please note, scientist profiles marked with an asterisk (*) are currently hiring.

Students should submit their resume, university transcripts and a letter of reference (from a professor or previous employer) when first contacting the scientist.

Due to the volume of applications received, only students selected for an interview will be contacted.

When is the application deadline?

Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Decisions must be made by April 1, 2010.
