Pursuit Award

The Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to present the annual Pursuit Award.  The award recognizes PhD students from across the globe for their outstanding achievements in childhood disability research.

Guidelines

  • Universities with doctoral programs may nominate one candidate
  • The PhD thesis topic of the nominee must be childhood disability
  • There are three topic categories:
  1. Health Research (2012) – defined as research with the goal of improving the diagnosis and treatment (including rehabilitation and palliation) of disease (chronic or acquired) and injury, thus enhancing the health and quality of life of children with disabilities and their families. Health outcomes research will be given priority.
  2. Social Sciences (2013)
  3. Natural Sciences and Engineering (2014)
  • Student must have successfully defended their doctoral thesis in the past two calendar years (for Health Research (2012) the two calendar years would begin at Jan. 1, 2010 – Dec. 31, 2011)
  • Student must have at least one paper in print or in press resulting from the thesis

Awards

Each year, up to three prizes will be awarded:

First Prize: $7,500
Second Prize: $2,500
Third Prize: $1,000

Travel and accommodation costs to present at the Award Ceremony will be covered by Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Application Procedure

The nomination package must include:

  1. nomination letter from the nominee’s Department Head;
  2. brief biographical sketch of candidate (1/2 page);
  3. current curriculum vitae of nominee (3 page maximum);
  4. thesis title and abstract;
  5. list of all publications arising from thesis (in print or in press);
  6. up to three preprints or reprints (include a description of contribution by nominee for each publication);
  7. letter of support from supervisor, describing why thesis is deemed an outstanding contribution to the field and why the student should be considered for the award; and
  8. completion of Pursuit Award Supervisor evaluation form (to be attached to letter of support from supervisor)

Please note: We are only accepting nominations for the Health Research category this year.

Selection Committee

The Selection Committee consists of six members, including: Vice President, Research (Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital); one external scientist of international renown; one scientist from the Bloorview Research Institute; one Graduate Student from the Bloorview Research Institute; and Vice President, Medicine and Academic Affairs. The selection criteria used to select the top three PhD Theses will be based on significance of research results; methodologic rigour; empirical content; and impact on childhood disability care. 

Award Ceremony

The Pursuit Award Ceremony will take place in the spring 2012 at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital; the top ranked nominees will present their work at a special symposium. Selection of first, second and third place will be made at the award ceremony.
