The generous investment will enable Bloorview Kids Rehab to be an international leader in applied, multidisciplinary research in the field of childhood disability. As well, it acknowledges the interest of the Foundation and its donors in generating knowledge to improve the quality of life of children and youth with disabilities and their families in Ontario, Canada and around the world.

The Bloorview Research Institute will formalize and integrate research at Bloorview Kids Rehab. It will build on the significant accomplishments of its scientists, train the next generation of disability researchers and conduct studies that meet international standards of excellence. As the first Research Institute to specialize in pediatric disability research in Canada, the Bloorview Research Institute will develop global partnerships and widely disseminate its findings.

A dynamic Bloorview Research Institute will be consistent with Bloorview’s role as an academic health science centre in the University of Toronto network.

Dr. Macarthur has built his research career on preventing injury in children, which is the number-one cause of death and disability in children. Previously, he was a senior scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and headed the pediatric outcomes research team. Dr. Macarthur is an outstanding epidemiologist who trained as a physician at Glasgow University, Scotland, and holds a Ph.D. in epidemiology and biostatistics from McGill University. He has taught in a variety of capacities in the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine and is passionate about evidence-based care.
