Orthotic Services

The orthotic team serves clients of all ages, from infants, children, youth to adults, who require exact-fitting orthoses (braces) to support, protect or realign parts of their bodies.

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital has certified orthotists and registered technicians who are trained to assess, design, make and fit highly effective and comfortable orthoses.

Certification is Canada’s guarantee of quality, unmatched professionalism and expertise in the field of orthotics.

Our staff specializes in orthoses for the limbs and spine - as well as custom-made protective headwear.

Experience in the most complex pediatric clients has trained our team to seek unique solutions with a best practices approach to casting and fitting for clients of all ages.

By staying up-to-date on the latest advancements in orthotics, we often lead the way with new treatment techniques that deliver improved client care. For example, custom silicone applications are being used for orthotic clients. These unique devices can often bring comfort and support that traditional splints and braces do not provide.

Also, our staff is experienced in the use of Botox combined with serial casting for management of spasticity. They also use the latest lower extremity stance phase control technology for clients with spinal cord injuries.

Treatment is offered for children and adults with a variety of disorders and disabilities including but not limited to: spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, developmental conditions, seizure disorders, spinal cord injury, scoliosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Orthotic services also provide wound management and postoperative cast management.
