Holland Bloorview’s client, Sophie, got the incredible opportunity to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the Blue Jays game on Tuesday October 2.
Sophie had the good fortune to meet the Toronto Blue Jays twice this summer during her stay at Holland Bloorview.
During the Jays’ first visit in July, Sophie was in a wheelchair, recovering from surgery. But, when they returned in late August, Sophie was walking.
It was during the second visit, the same day that Sophie had been given the green light to go home, that Ricky Romero asked her to throw the ceremonial first pitch at last night's game. In her own words, Sophie described that day as “the best day of her life”.
At the game, Sophie was greeted by Ricky Romero when she entered the field. Having been the one to extend the invitation, Romero stuck by her side the entire time she was on the field. Sophie’s all time favourite player, Jose Bautista, is currently injured and had been sent home to Florida for his recovery. His injury however, did not stop him from surprising Sophie on her special night. Not only did Bautista surprise Sophie with his presence, he also gave her an autographed bat and spent time with her and Romero on the field.
A few minutes before Sophie headed to the pitching mound, Brett Lawrie came over to introduce himself and told Sophie it was nice to meet her! At 6:55 p.m. Sophie, Ace and Romero headed out for the ceremonial pitch. Like a pro, Sophie threw a precise pitch which was received by Romero. He then autographed the ball which Sophie held tight for the rest of the night.
It was an incredibly special evening for Sophie, her family and friends. A big thank you goes to Katherine Upshall for organizing the evening (arranging 10 tickets for Sophie’s family and 100 tickets for Holland Bloorview staff and clients), The Blue Jays Care Foundation for their generosity and to Ricky Romero, Brett Lawrie and Jose Bautista for making Sophie’s night that much more memorable.
