Stories: Bloorview and Tourism Toronto give a family a weekend to remember

The family of Monika Barbosa Marques, a former long-time client of Bloorview, will only bring Monika to Bloorview for respite care despite having moved to Kitchener some time ago. 

“Bloorview is the only place I trust to bring Monika for respite.  It’s a long drive, but the care Monika receives here is amazing,” says Luciene Sestrem, Monika’s mother.

When the family saw an article in the newspaper about Tourism Toronto’s Relax, Recharge & Renew program they were excited about the prospect of a fun family weekend in Toronto.

The program offers parents of children with complex needs the opportunity enjoy some of Toronto’s theatre shows, sporting events, attractions and restaurants, while their children receive high-quality care from the staff at Bloorview, Safehaven or Community Living Toronto.

The family brought Monika to Bloorview on October 24 and departed on special weekend treat with their other three children, Philip age 15, Louise age seven and Lucas age five.  

“This is such a great opportunity to get out, and spend some quality time with our other kids.  Monika is always the top priority in our family, and it’s really nice to be able to give my other kids a treat,” says Luciene.

The family got the chance to visit the Ontario Science Centre and Canada’s Wonderland.  They also enjoyed a two-night stay at the Courtyard Marriott and family dinners at the Pickle Barrel and Montana’s Cookhouse. 

The family thoroughly enjoyed each activity, and had a fun and relaxing time.  

“We would like to thank Tourism Toronto and Bloorview Kids Rehab for giving us this wonderful weekend getaway.  We are grateful and very much humbled by the generosity and effort put forward to help families with special needs. This weekend will never be forgotten,” says Michael De Andrade, Monika’s father.
