Newsroom

Rhinovirus outbreak

As of January 26, we are experiencing an outbreak of a mild respiratory infection on Holland Bloorview's third floor, east wing. Currently, there are two confirmed cases. Symptoms include cough and runny/stuff nose (with or without fever). All clients with symptoms are being treated in isolation. Any client showing two or more symptoms will also be moved to isolation.

Rhinoviruses are often mild, producing cold-like symptoms. However, in some cases the infection can be more serious, resulting in pneumonia or other respiratory complications. Children with pre-existing cardio-pulmonary conditions or weakened immune systems may be at increased risk of complications. Rhinovirus is transmitted easily from person to person or from contaminated surfaces, so it is very important for all visitors and staff at Holland Bloorview to wash their hands frequently to prevent the spread of infection.

Because of the outbreak, we will limit visitors for clients with symptoms to two per client. This limit helps us to minimize the spread of illness. Please leave the facility ASAP after your visit to reduce the chance of exposure to infection. If you are ill, please do not visit Holland Bloorview. If you are on-site and are ill, you will be asked to wear a mask. All visitors must wash their hands frequently.

We will continue to work closely with Toronto Public Health to manage this outbreak. Thank you everyone for your cooperation.
