More Than Just Clowning Around: Study Reveals the Impact of Therapeutic Clowns on Nurses

theraputic clowns at holland bloorviewThe red nose and quirky attire of a therapeutic clown can often paint a smile on the face of a child in hospital, improving their mood, outlook and ultimately, contributing to their recovery. A second paper from the Clowning Around study, published in Arts & Health by Holland Bloorview’s Stefanie Blain, Shauna Kingsnorth, Lindsay Stephens and Pat McKeever, aimed at determining the effects of therapeutic clowning on nurses in a children’s rehabilitation hospital, found that clowning is also a valuable addition to healthcare settings. The study, supported by the Bloorview Research Institute Seed Grant, saw improvement in nurses’ communication, role negotiation and overall atmosphere of the unit.

Holland Bloorview is delighted to receive the results of this study, as it helps solidify the role of therapeutic clowns in the hospital setting. Read the full study here: www.tandfonline.com
