change maker award for leadershipAt the Neurological Health Charities of Canada’s (NHCC) BrainWave dinner on Tuesday, March 1 2011, Holland Bloorview was proud to receive one of three NHCC Change-Maker Awards. Beginning this year, NHCC’s Change-Maker Awards will be presented annually to leaders who demonstrate innovation, inclusion and integration for the benefit of Canadians living with a brain condition.

Holland Bloorview is proud to have been nominated for the award by a key partner, Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Over the years, the two organizations have partnered on joint initiatives with the goal of collaboratively supporting patients with neuromuscular conditions. In her nomination letter, Marla Spiegel, Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s National Director, Research, Programs and Services said, “We have witnessed first hand the difference that is made in the lives of patients, thanks to the care, compassion and creativity expressed by the staff (at Holland Bloorview).”
Holland Bloorview President and CEO, Sheila Jarvis, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital. “It is truly our pleasure to be recognized by our peers and like-minded organizations for the work that we do,” said Jarvis.

Holland Bloorview was recognized in the presence of the Deb Matthews, Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long-term Care. The dinner was attended by 275 members of Canada’s brain community (neurological and mental health), including people living with a brain condition, caregivers and family members, health care professionals, researchers, community service providers, policy makers, industry representatives, health charity professionals and philanthropists.

Joyce Gordon, CEO of the Parkinson Society Canada and Chair of the Neurological Health Charities Canada, described Holland Bloorview as “a shining example of leadership in innovation, inclusion and integration for the benefit of children with disabilities, many related to a neurological condition.”

As Canada’s largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital, Holland Bloorview sees it as a duty to lead the way in creating a world of possibilities for children with disabilities. The hospital is honoured to be recognized alongside two other amazing organizations doing great work. Other Change-Maker award winners include Baycrest Centre and the Globe and Mail.
