Why this study: Children with disabilities are at a particularly high risk of being excluded or bullied. Sally Lindsay, Scientist with the Bloorview Research Institute, will explore children’s experiences and responses to being bullied or excluded. This will help educators and policy makers to develop more effective anti-bullying interventions and inclusion strategies for children.
Who will the study focus on: This study will be focused on youth aged 8-16 with a diagnosed physical disability who attend an integrated school (e.g., regular class with or without support); or a special education class with partial integration.
How will the research be conducted: This research involves qualitative focus group discussions with children about their experiences, along with their suggestions on how to improve inclusion at school and in the community. Focus group discussions will take place at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital over the next few months.
The impact: “Our project is particularly timely and relevant as Ontario school boards are now required to develop and implement policies on bullying prevention and intervention. We hope to gain a better understanding of children’s experiences with exclusion and bullying so that we can develop more effective strategies to facilitate full inclusion of children with disabilities,” says Sally Lindsay, lead investigator for the study.
