Bringing visibility to disability: filmpossible

Claude Watson Arts Program students help promote filmpossible!

When Walter Raemisch heard about the idea for filmpossible, he wanted to help.  He invited Holland Bloorview to hold a focus group with students at Earl Haig Secondary School, where he teaches screen arts in the renowned Claude Watson Arts Program.

Impressed by the enthusiasm of the 20 plus students who took part in the focus group, Raemisch and his colleagues Grahame Joy and Hugh Smith decided to make a class project of filmpossible. The students toured Holland Bloorview, where they met former clients and had a chance to visit the Bloorview Research Institute, Centre for the Arts, therapeutic programs, prosthetics lab and the Bloorview School.

Working in small groups, the grade 12 screen arts students created promotional trailers that would explain and bring attention to filmpossible. The students worked closely with Holland Bloorview staff through the process of creating their promo videos.

“We were blown away by the creativity of the videos and diversity of approaches to childhood disability,” said Christa Haanstra, Chief of Communications and Public Affairs at Holland Bloorview.

A different promo video will be featured each week on the contest website: www.filmpossible.ca
