DegrassiPalooza aligns with kids rehabilitation hospital

Once in a lifetime event chooses Holland Bloorview as charity of choice.

TORONTO, ON (April 17, 2019) – Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is happy to announce that they have been chosen as charity of choice for DegrassiPalooza, taking place this June. DegrassiPalooza is a nostalgic, three-day event happening June 14 – 16, 2019 in Toronto featuring over 25 cast and crew from the original Degrassi series, Degrassi Junior High

Proceeds from the event’s silent auction and Degrassi escape room will be donated to Holland Bloorview to support the hospital’s highest priority needs. The silent auction will feature one-of-a-kind items created by the cast and crew, memorabilia and other unique pieces. The escape room is created by Phil Strange and is sure to be a hit among event attendees.

The Degrassi franchise focuses Toronto youth and their realistic high school experiences and is Canada’s longest-running dramatic series. Over the years, Degrassi has had characters with disabilities represented in various season. Degrassi Junior High character Shane MacKay was the first character in Degrassi history to portray a character with a disability on the show. Shane, played by actor Billy Parrot, acquired a brain injury as part of his storyline, which left him with physical and developmental disabilities.

“We are proud to partner with the hospital for the event, as there is a natural alignment between DegrassiPalooza and Holland Bloorview,” said Billy Parrot, who portrayed Shane MacKay in the original Degrassi series. “I loved my time on Degrassi Junior High and I know my character, Shane, would have benefitted greatly from the types of programs and services that Holland Bloorview offers after his accident.”

“We’re extremely grateful to DegrassiPalooza for choosing to support Holland Bloorview during this amazing event,” said Sandra Hawken, President and CEO of Holland Bloorview Foundation. “These proceeds will enable us to continue to invest in creating a world of possibilities for kids with disabilities. A huge thank you to Pat Mastroianni, Billy Parrot and the rest of the cast and crew for supporting Holland Bloorview.”

Tickets for this are now on sale and are available on the DegrassiPalooza website. The Degrassi escape room, created by Phil Strange, as well as the silent auction will run during the event on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16.
