Mark
Confident, Capable Boy
As told by Mark’s mother, Alison
Mark and his twin brother Douglas were born over three months early and had a long and tough road in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. When the boys finally came home, we hoped that our toughest days were over. Six months later, Mark's physical challenges were becoming clear. Mark was officially diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
At first there was confusion and frustration as we tried to figure out next steps. We had so many questions about Mark's care, about his therapy plan, about the kind of life he'd lead.We felt lost and alone; that is, until we arrived at Bloorview Kids Rehab, Canada's largest rehabilitation hospital for children with disabilities. We learned that Bloorview is recognized as a world-leading model, and for good reason. Bloorview brings together the care needed to support families — doctors, physical therapists, education and resources for parents. Through Bloorview, Mark has benefited from leading innovations to help children with disabilities. These innovations have made a profound difference to children globally. In our family, we know that Bloorview has helped Mark become the confident and capable boy he is today.
