Crystal
Fine Just As I Am
Crystal is an incredibly social 19-year old, who has been coming to Bloorview for over 10 years. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy during her late infancy. With the support of her comprehensive healthcare team, Crystal has drawn on many Bloorview programs and services to maximize her potential.
“I am from a culture where having a disability is often considered shameful.
I did not realize the potential I possess within, until the day my family
immigrated to Canada and I started receiving services from Bloorview
Kids Rehab.” – Crystal
Most recently, Crystal has benefited from Bloorview’s Lifeskills and Wellness programs to assist her in the transition from adolescence to adulthood including: LIFE span, The Independence Program and the recently launched Leaders in Training Program. Through these customized programs at Bloorview, Crystal has acquired real-life skills and hands on training that will enable her to reach her future goals.
Although, Crystal is excited about her upcoming plans to attend University, she is also thrilled to be able to give back to Bloorview. Crystal sits on Bloorview’s Youth Advisory Committee, which provides critical feedback on the programs and services offered at Bloorview and she also mentors younger kids with disabilities.
“Since my disability impacts all aspects of my life, I was under the impression that I would never be ‘successful’ or accomplish anything in life. That was until I started working with the dedicated staff at Bloorview, who not only encouraged and assisted me to work on my difficulties, but also convinced me that I am fine just as I am and that there is nothing to be ashamed of. I am who I am today because the staff at Bloorview believed in me and saw something in me that no one else did,” stated Crystal.
