Bloorview is Like an Extended Family

Claire

Each time Claire’s mother Susan comes to Bloorview Kids Rehab with her daughter for treatment, she feels uplifted, “You just feel that you’re a part of a wonderful organization that helps children with disabilities be the best they can be,” says Susan.

When Claire was 18 months, Susan brought her to Bloorview for a

myoelectric hand, which is a prosthetic hand, as she was born missing her left hand—a congenital condition with no known cause.  Susan was told her infant was missing a hand when she was 20 weeks pregnant.

“Knowing your child will be born with special needs is a hard thing and understandably we were sad, but so many kids at Bloorview have greater challenges,” says Susan.
.
Now 2, Claire will soon be starting occupational therapy and the Bloorview Swim program. She has a brother named Patrick,15,  and identical 13-year-old twin brothers named  Daniel and Andrew.

“I think that donors should support Bloorview so that every child at Bloorview has the ability to reach their full potential,” says Susan “To me Bloorview is like an extended family who cares about us and seeks to provide whatever type of support we might be in need of.”

If Claire could meet anyone famous, she’d love to meet a famous athlete who uses a prosthetic device like she does.  For energetic Claire, playing ball is her favourite sport for the moment.
