Alison

Being in a wheelchair hasn’t stopped Alison from achieving what she wants.  She is very active and excels at basketball.  Alison played wheelchair basketball for Team Ontario and went to the 2003 and 2007 Canada Games.  In 2003, Alison and her teammates won a Bronze medal and an outstanding Silver medal at the 2007 games.

Alison was born with sacral agenesis and was referred to Bloorview when she was only six months old.  For over 18 years, Alison used Bloorview’s comprehensive programs and services including  physiotherapy, occupational therapy, clinics, x-rays, wheelchair fittings, swimming lessons, sports and recreational camps, and dental services to name just a few.

“The care my family and I have received has been phenomenal. The support and encouragement from the staff and volunteers at Bloorview have been crucial to my many successes in my life. I will forever be grateful,” says Alison.

Alison maintains a very active lifestyle.  She enjoys skiing, paragliding, traveling and loves to spend time with her family.  She also loves to attend concerts, movies and treasures her volunteer time at Bloorview.  Alison has completed her sociology degree from McMaster University and hopes to one day go to teachers’ college. Since graduating, she has spent 6 months working for SickKids in research, went travelling on her own and has spent the remainder of her year volunteering at Bloorview in the school programs.

Alison reflects fondly on her time and experience at Bloorview and hopes to work in Bloorview’s School as a special education teacher.

“Bloorview opened up many doors for me! I love my Bloorview family and will stay connected to them forever,” says Alison.
