Our Donors: Bloorview is Barbara Underhill’s Charity of Choice
I chose to support Bloorview Kids Rehab, if I win the grand prize for
Battle of the Blades, because of two very personal connections Melissa Thorne and Dom Cozzolino.
My niece, Melissa, was born with spina bifida and has endured many challenges in her 16 years—more than any young person should have to face. She has required countless surgeries, two hip reconstructions and a hip replacement. Each time she spent months at Bloorview Kids Rehab. Melissa has faced so much adversity in her young life, yet she always rises to the challenge, with unbelievable strength and courage, and is an inspiration to so many. Bloorview has been like a second home to her over the years–an amazing place that cares for and supports many children going through the biggest challenges of their young lives.
This past March, a young boy on my son’s hockey team, Dom Cozzolino, was injured when he was checked into the boards during a game. One minute he was playing the game he loved so much, and the next he was lying on the ice—his life changed forever. Dom shattered one of his vertebrae and although he lay motionless on the ice, he didn’t remain permanently paralyzed. Dom spent four months in rehab learning how to walk again at Bloorview. The strength and determination he has shown during this unbelievable test, as well as his positive attitude, has been remarkable to watch. It is amazing to see him walking again, and we are all hoping that he will he will make a full recovery.
I am skating for Melissa and Cozzi, and all the young people that rely on Bloorview, and I hope that we can make you proud!
