Bloorview is thrilled to have recruited Dr. Evdokia Anagnostou, an internationally renowned clinician scientist and an expert in autism research. Dr. Anagnostou is conducting clinical trials that will help identify the first viable medications for kids with autism.

There are more children diagnosed with autism than ever before — the incidence is now one out of every 112 births. Yet autism is still a medical mystery. No one knows its cause. There are not enough healthcare professionals in the field. Quality training programs are scarce. And research into the etiology, diagnosis, biology and treatment options is under-funded.

Bloorview is the provincial “hub” for autism assessment and diagnoses hundreds of children each year. Yet there is not much evidence-informed intervention to offer families in the way of solutions. We’re trying to change that. Dr. Anagnostou’s research will help identify medications that treat the negative behaviours associated with autism (aggression,
for example), and facilitate skill acquisition.

It’s time to make radical progress in an area that has long been overlooked. We need to generate new knowledge. We need to attract the best young talent in the field. We need to improve treatments, outcomes and quality of life for children with autism. And we need to dedicate the resources necessary to accomplish all of this.

The Alva Foundation understands these needs and is committed to funding cutting-edge research and programs in this area. In June, the Alva Foundation pledged $150,000 towards the Bloorview Research Institute and Dr. Anagnostou’s study of the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of young children with autism.

It is widely agreed that early intervention has the potential to enhance development and prevent the worst symptoms of autism. However, no medications have been tested in children under five years of age, due to possible side effects. Unlike other medications, omega-3s are a safe part of our daily diet, and evidence suggests they have a positive effect on neurodevelopment.

Bloorview’s three-year study of the effects of omega-3s on very young children with autism is the first of its kind and has the potential to benefit countless children diagnosed with this pervasive disorder. We are very grateful to the Alva Foundation for its outstanding support.
