Light Side of the Moon, 2009
Metal, glass, concrete
Deanna Bowlby, Christopher Martin
The art installation, Light Side of the Moon, located near the north
parking lot was unveiled on September 4, 2009. The installation, created by Spiral Garden artists, Deanna Bowlby and Christopher Martin and facilitated by Shannon Crossman, is meant to elicit curiosity.
When children, families and visitors come to Holland Bloorview, they often comment on the positive impact the special installations have on their sense of well-being. We have eagerly awaited the completion of our final two installations.
The artists created Light Side of the Moon to engage and involve the clients, staff and the larger community by its form, size, colour, texture and detailing. The sculpture’s shape is derived from nature, a flower seed head, and its location situates it as the perfect marker for people looking to enjoy the treasures that the Spiral Garden offers.
“The installation is a beacon of creativity with the playfulness of Spiral Garden that inspires a sense of wonder,” said Shannon.
The sculpture is peppered with many different-sized clear and coloured lenses, some custom-made, enabling viewers to go beyond the surface and view the internal structure so they may enjoy the sculpture from the inside and the outside. The varying heights of the glass lenses allow children to see different perspectives as they grow.
