Susann Palmiere - Advocacy - 2003

As a parent of two children with disabilities, Susann’s service in advocacy was triggered by her frustrations with the health and school systems and the opportunities she saw for meaningful change.  Chair of the family advisory committee, Susann is also actively involved in the provincial outreach committee, bioethics committee, the 2004 transitions conference steering committee and the transition online resource task group.

Susann recognizes the value of having parents and other caregivers having a say in the strategic directions, policies and operations of organizations that impact their lives. With others, she has led the development of new standards for family-centred care for the Child Health Network.

Susann’s advocacy work extends to the provincial arena. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Association of Children’s Rehabilitation Centres, she has participated in many advocacy meetings with MPPs.

Susann is a role model and an inspiration to other parents, and brings them together to develop and lobby for programs for young people with disabilities.
