From childhood, Sandy Mitchell had a vision to create a dynamic, outdoor environment that was accessible to everybody. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age, Sandy knew he wanted to help people with disabilities lead more fulfilling lives.
An avid athlete in his own right, competing in the Paralympics as an equestrian, sailor and downhill skier, Sandy opened WindReach Farm in 1989.
WindReach Farm enriches the lives of persons of all ages with disabilities and/or special needs by providing opportunities to enjoy experiences in farming, nature, and outdoor recreation and to share those experiences with family and friends.
Located near the slopes of the Great Pine Ridge in southern Ontario, WindReach Farm provides a year round accessible agricultural environment and is especially designed for individuals and small groups of all ages with disabilities.
In partnership with the Ministry of Health Promotion, Bloorview recently had the opportunity to film an educational video about adapted winter activities at WindReach Farm.
“Many clients and families from Bloorview have participated in events at WindReach Farm, especially children with higher needs for whom the opportunities farm life, or outdoor activities are few,” says Barbara Anthony, Recreation Awareness Coordinator in the Active Living Centre at Bloorview.
Due to the overwhelming success of his farm in Ontario, in 1999 Sandy opened the 9-acre WindReach Farm Recreational Village in Bermuda.
Sandy has been successful in creating an atmosphere of acceptance and accessibility, giving over 21, 000 visitors to WindReach Farm since 1989 valued memories, unique experiences and the power of inclusiveness for children with disabilities and their families.
