Advocacy
As a founding partner of the architectural firm Montgomery Sisam, Terry Montgomery has become an internationally recognized leader in the field of accessibility design.
With over 30 years experience in design, Terry led a team of design professionals through the planning, design and construction phases of Bloorview’s state-of-the-art facility. The facility is acknowledged in Canada and around the world as a standard for universal accessibility, and has been recognized with a number of awards including one from the International Academy for Health and Design.
Terry harnessed the expertise gained through the accessible design of Bloorview’s facility, and has become a true advocate for universal accessibility. Terry has applied this knowledge to numerous other projects. He generously shares his expertise on accessible design with the global design community and is always eager to provide tours to young architectural students as well as dignitaries and leaders advocating the need for accessibility in design.
Terry’s intuition, ability to hear and respond to the needs of others, combined with his personal sense of integrity and humility have contributed to his leadership in this area.
Reflecting on the impact of Terry’s work in the field of design, Anne Carlyle of Carlyle Design Associates states, “Terry’s work in ‘making places’ for people has lead me to think of this work as a form of his life’s mission – it is an inspiration to me and to so many of Terry’s clients and colleagues.”
Terry has truly become a champion of accessible design. Terry has been an invited guest and presenter at conferences in Montreal, Chicago and Singapore. His contributions have raised the bar for world class accessibility standards.
