Dr. Mercer Rang – Education – 2000

Senior Orthopedic Surgeon, Hospital for Sick Children
Professor, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto
Consulting Orthopedic Surgeon, Bloorview MacMillan Centre

Mercer is a world-renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon, teacher and lecturer. He is a gifted teacher, with ability to express himself eloquently with the spoken word and illustrate his textbooks with whimsical but powerful line drawings that explain the issues about which he writes. He has an uncanny awareness of what is important and new in the pediatric orthopedic field. As a result, his groundbreaking research has often led the way and provided important stimuli for others. For example, he learned about and exploited the use of the “spastic mouse” as an animal model for studies on interventions for people with cerebral palsy.

While technically “retired,” Mercer continues to actively provide a specialized intervention service at Bloorview MacMillan Centre. At a clinic for children with spina bifida, Mercer administers Botox – a toxin that helps improve arm and hand movement in children with cerebral palsy. He continues to consult widely about developmental orthopedics, and remains actively involved in international travel as a lecturer and teacher. His numerous books and publications serve as required learning materials for orthopedic students around the world.
