Jan MacKie – Service – 2004

Jan MacKie’s commitment to children and youth with disabilities started 18 years ago when she joined the staff of the fledgling Spiral Garden program. Due to her leadership, creativity, and dedication, Spiral Garden has achieved an international reputation as an exemplary, integrated arts program for children across Canada and in Sri Lanka and Palestine.

More than a tireless worker, Jan is also a gifted artist, an original and lively thinker, and an inspired teacher. Guiding the Spiral Garden program, she has mentored a growing community of artists, staff and youth who return year after year to work at Bloorview MacMillan, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for the children and their families. In the words of a fellow staff member, “Perhaps it’s the dancing, the painting, the play, the making of canopies, the helping hand, the stories, the sage-like advice, the seemingly boundless energy, the love…”

Her unique gifts in community building and creating partnerships have helped to shape the face of the Bloorview MacMillan Children’s Centre by adding another dimension to the services we offer.
