Louise Kinross

Advocacy

Louise Kinross is a leading voice advocating for parents of kids with disabilities.  As Communications Manager at Holland Bloorview and a parent of a child with a disability, Louise Kinross is the editor of BLOOM Magazine – our biannual how-to magazine on parenting children with disabilities.  In May 2009, the BLOOM Blog was launched - creating an international community for parents of children with disabilities.

Louise Kinross

Through BLOOM, Louise has succeeded in empowering families, advocating for children with disabilities and mobilizing rehabilitation professionals at Holland Bloorview and beyond. BLOOM helps parents to understand the powerful impact they can have in their children’s lives with regular column titles like Role Model, Parent Talk and Trailblazer.  The magazine and blog tackle tough issues faced by parents of children with disabilities in an open and frank way, while providing information about the latest scientific research, expert opinions and celebrating children’s successes.

BLOOM magazine has a 7,000 print run, while the blog has had 19,000 hits since its launch - with 500 weekly visitors. The BLOOM website regularly receives visitors from 32 countries and the accompanying e-newsletter reaches over 2,500 parents. Through her immense passion, creativity, enthusiasm and hands-on knowledge, Louise has transformed what started as an 8-page corporate newsletter called Connections into a 36-page, full-colour and one-of-a-kind magazine, blog, website and e-newsletter.

Kim Pittaway, former Editor of Chatelaine magazine, praises BLOOM in the way that it “acknowledges and honours the human, emotional side while grounding it in the latest research and delving into the moral and philosophical underpinnings as well.”

A parent of a child with a disability herself, Louise successfully fills the void in mainstream parenting media with content about parenting children with disabilities. In fact, Louise has been asked to provide a voice for parents with children with disabilities through participation in a number of interviews, guest blogs and a recent panel on TVO.

Parents have heralded BLOOM as cutting-edge.  It covers a diverse range of topics and is punctuated with parent voices from around the world, while promoting the concept that every child ‘blooms’ in his or her own way.
