The Kimel Family are true community leaders and philanthropists. Through their exceptional financial contributions and dedicated personal time, the Kimel Family have helped create a better world for children and youth with disabilities and their families.
Inspired by his sister, Elkie Adler who had multiple sclerosis, Ron Kimel took the lead on behalf of his family in demonstrating his support for the cause of disability. As a leader and advocate for children with disabilities, Ron Kimel has served on the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, numerous Foundation committees and has been an active supporter of Holland Bloorview through fundraising initiatives.
The Kimel Family’s first major gift to Holland Bloorview was made during the Defy Disability capital campaign. The donation resulted in the naming of Holland Bloorview’s pool in memory of Ron’s sister, Elkie Adler. Since 1993, the Kimels have donated more $500,000 to the Holland Bloorview and dinners hosted by Ron Kimel have helped raise awareness and more than $1.5 million in new funds.
William Holland, a member of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and CEO of CI Financial says of Ron, “his commitment to Holland Bloorview extends beyond that of raising funds and awareness. Ron’s willingness to open doors and make key introductions for the Foundation has been phenomenal and is what sets him apart as someone who is deeply dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children with disabilities.”
Through the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, the Kimels have established two scholarships with the University of Toronto to help develop an international community of highly-skilled rehabilitation specialists who will advance care, research and education in the field of childhood disability. The Kimel Family Graduate Student Scholarship in Pediatric Rehabilitation and The Kimel Family Graduate Student Scholarship in Pediatric Disability Research help build capacity within the field of childhood disability - attracting and retaining the best and the brightest.
“The graduates who benefit from these scholarships are creating new knowledge and insights into childhood disability and are making a tangible difference for children and families” said Catharine Whiteside, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at University of Toronto.
