Jane Palmer – Service – 2000

Manager (retired), School Health Support Services, Bloorview MacMillan Centre

Jane is described as a visionary. As the manager of School Health Support Services, she was passionate that students with disabilities should be treated in their community school long before this was the norm. Her pioneering work in service integration serves as a model to others. As well, Jane incorporated the use of outcome measures in School Health Support Services before they were an expectation in the rehabilitation field. Ten years before it was common practice, she also demonstrated a strong commitment to building partnerships.

Jane’s “gracious professionalism” was instrumental in her creating and sustaining several forums that brought together community agencies, educators from local school boards as well as the Ontario Ministry of
Education. Because of these connections, she was able to successfully steer School Health Support Services through the changes in the home-care system and the introduction of Community Care Access Centres.

Upon her retirement earlier this year, Jane’s legacy soon became apparent. Thanks to years of Jane’s leadership, the Toronto CCAC has recently confirmed that Bloorview MacMillan Centre will continue in the near future to be the local provider of School Health Support Services.
