Helen Henderson – Advocacy – 2000

Journalist, The Toronto Star

Helen’s popular and influential column dealing with concerns around disabilities was born about 20 years ago when she proposed to The Toronto Star that it publish more stories about disability issues. Ever since, Helen has made an exceptional contribution to building public awareness and understanding of these issues.

Helen attended Bloorview MacMillan’s community forum on the Ontarians with Disabilities Act last year. She expressed how energized she was by hearing the younger generation of disability advocates talk about the barriers they face, along with solutions for the future.

Helen subsequently visited our Teen Independence Program. In addition to writing about the three-week, in-residence summer program, she went the extra step by inviting several participants who were interested in journalism to The Toronto Star. There, they were introduced to other journalists and received a first-hand understanding of how a newsroom works.  Helen’s advocacy about disability issues pertaining to young people continues to this day, with a recent column published about a lifestyle study conducted by Bloorview MacMillan Centre.
