Helen Healy – Service – 2003

Learning through experience, failure and success is a rite of passage for all adolescents. However, adolescents with disabilities usually do not have equal opportunities to learn these important life skills. Helen Healy recognized this gap inservice and set out to make changes.

Helen pioneered programs such as the teen clinic and the independence program.  She helped clients identify goals and develop skills to manage activities of daily living through practical learning opportunities.

Helen’s ability to turn ideas into actions continues with the transitions conferences.  This initiative places Bloorview MacMillan in the forefront of successful transition planning.

The impact of Helen’s leadership in this field is recognized at Bloorview MacMillan and beyond. The tools that she and her team have created and continue to develop enable young people with disabilities to be more self-sufficient and confident in their abilities to successfully move into the adult world.
