Dr. Doug Biggar – Service – 2003

Doug Biggar has provided clinical leadership at Bloorview MacMillan for more than a decade. As the physician director of the neuromuscular clinic, Doug has taken the clinic to a new level with a strong focus on family-centred care and team approach.

Concerned about the impact of multiple clinic appointments on children and families, Doug established a new innovative “telephone” clinic that provides assessments of established clients and families over the phone. This saves families hours of travel and expense. Doug’s rapport with clients and families is genuine and honest. He places the respect and wellbeing of children as his first priority.

Doug has also developed a strong clinical research program with international partners. He is on the leading edge of investigating and publishing the long-term health benefits and positive impact on quality of life of the medication deflazacourt for boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). He has been a keynote speaker at several conferences, many sponsored by Parent Project, a group of families of boys with DMD.
