Awards: 2006 Circle of Honour Recipients

Mr. David Lepofsky - Advocacy – 2006

David Lepofsky has been a life-long advocate for people with disabilities. As one of the country’s leading constitutional lawyers, he has demonstrated unprecedented leadership, creativity, community engagement and impact through his work.

David’s advocacy started when he was a law student in 1982. Going before the committee drafting the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, he called for people with disabilities to be included in the equal rights provision, a pursuit he accomplished.

Along with his successful efforts to amend the Ontario Human Rights Code to include people with disabilities, David is the chair and a founding member of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee. This committee is leading the advocacy front, creating a true vision for a barrier free Ontario and promoting the right of full participation for people with disabilities.

His work has been recognized by many organizations and he has received awards from a number of Universities, the Canadian Public Health Association and he was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995.

His accomplishments are inspiring, however, he recognizes there is still more work to be done. “Our campaign for equality continues”, he says. “Although we still face many barriers, we now know much more about how to wage it and are more determined than ever”.
