2011 Circle of Honour Awards

Holland Bloorview is proud to welcome six new recipients into our Circle of Honour.  Each recipient has demonstrated leadership in the advancement of the field of childhood disability on provincial, national or international levels.

Circle of Honour Awards are Holland Bloorview’s highest honour - recognizing outstanding contributions to the field of childhood disability. Awards are presented to individuals, organizations, teams, or groups in the areas of advocacy, education, research, and service related to children’s rehabilitation and complex continuing care. Awards are also presented annually by the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation in the area of philanthropy.

Congratulations to all recipients:  

Karen Shopsowitz – Advocacy
A film director, writer and editor, Karen Shopsowitz is an award-winning filmmaker and a true advocate for bringing awareness to, and understanding of childhood disability.

Caron Gan – Education
Caron Gan is a highly respected couple and family therapist on the family support service team within the brain injury rehab team outpatient program at Holland Bloorview.

The Sanfilippo Research Foundation – Research
Founded in 1999 by the Linton family, the Sanfilippo Children’s Research Foundation is the first research foundation in Canada striving to find a cure or treatment for Sanfilippo Syndrome.

Jerzy Antczak, Bill Johnson and Michael Cullen – Service
Known as the problem solvers, Jerzy Antczak, Bill Johnson and Michael Cullen are the team to call when others can’t find a solution.

The Harold E. Ballard Foundation – Philanthropy
The Harold Ballard Foundation was founded in 1993. A philanthropic leader in his time, Harold Ballard established the foundation with the mission to help children with disabilities and address social problems at their roots.

Vito & Sandra Bigioni – Philanthropy
Vito and Sandra Bigioni know firsthand the value of Holland Bloorview’s respite care programs. This motivated the couple to take action when funding for the SmartCentres March Break Creative Arts Respite Camp was in jeopardy in 2007.

Awards were presented on June 15 at Holland Bloorview’s annual Celebration of Excellence event by Tom Flynn, Holland Bloorview’s outgoing chair of the Board of Trustees, Dougal Macdonald, chair of the Foundation Board of Directors and Pauline Beal, Holland Bloorview client.
