Dr. Arlette Lefebvre – Advocacy – 2001

Arlette, who is associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, psychiatric consultant at Bloorview MacMillan Children’s Centre and staff psychiatrist the Hospital for Sick Children, has had an exceptional career in working with children with disabilities and their families.

In 1979, Arlette co-founded the Craniofacial Family Association, currently known as AboutFace. This 6,000-member program provides information and emotional support to parents of children born with facial differences, and works to increase the understanding and acceptance of people who look different.

In 1991, Arlette became the founding president of Ability OnLine. This network allows children and youth with disabilities or chronic illnesses to connect with one another, as well as to their friends, family members and caregivers. It removes social and physical barriers associated with having a disability or illness, and also provides opportunities for children and young people to exchange information, build self-confidence, share hope and encouragement, and make friends.

Arlette has been involved with several volunteer organizations, including Concerned Kids, Alliance for Children and Kids Help Phone.  She is a recipient of the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada.
