Championing Change: Employment Standards

Holland Bloorview submitted feedback to the May 2009 public consultation on the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) proposed Employment Standard.

We provided input based on our experience in working with youth with disabilities who are looking for employment. We expressed our overall support for the standard, as it is directly in line with our role in preparing youth for adulthood, which includes looking for employment.

We commended the AODA for creating a standard that fills in the gaps of the Employment Standards Act and the Human Rights Code as it relates to employment for people with disabilities. It provides specific guidelines and expectations for employers, and outlines what people with disabilities can expect in the work environment. We also identified a few items that needed further development and examples, and requested that they enhance the focus on employment barriers for youth with disabilities.
